Existen varias especies de agave, cuyo jugo puede ser fermentado y destilado para la producción de bebidas alcohólicas, sin embargo, sólo el agave Tequilana Weber en su variedad azul es el único autorizado para la elaboración de tequila. El cultivo de esta planta requiere de la combinación de numerosos factores como:  

·         La altitud, preferentemente a 1500 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

· Las condiciones de la tierra, favorablemente suelo volcánico, arcilloso, permeable y abundante en elementos derivados del basalto y riqueza en fierro.

·         Pluviosidad, cerca de un metro anual.

· Temperatura constante de clima semiseco que oscile entre los 20º· Importante la exposición al sol, ya que se considera favorable que existan nublados entre 65 y 100 días del año.

 Sólo una región de aproximadamente 209 km2 en el estado de Jalisco reúne las mejores condiciones, para mejor reproducción del agave azul Tequilana Weber: la famosa región de Tequila.
